Today I am sharing the results of the next challenge with my crafty friend, BożenA. It was her turn to name the challenge theme and she chose “Behind the curtain” We were to depict something about ourselves that we don’t reveal easily or talk about much. I thus decided that this was a topic for my art journal as I was going to portrait my take on feminism.
My art journal is a disc bound journal for which I make the pages myself of whatever paper is relevant for my page. I made this page of watercolor paper. I created the background with three colors of watercolor paints – yellow, purple and black. Once it was dry, I sprayed it with water and dabbed the water with a paper towel to create some visual interest. I added some random designs with a stencil from my stash and Distress Oxide ink applied with a blending tool. Using a canvas look background stamp from my stash, I added some random patches of Memento Tuxedo Black ink. Finally I inked the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Oxide ink and I then set the background aside.
To depict my focal image, I used a witch digi from Molly Morrison Art and the dahlia is created with the current Altenew Craft-a-Flower die set cut out of shades of pink. I printed the digi out onto Canson C’ a Grain Drawing paper through the Silhouette Studio and colored her with my pencils. I colored the black edging on her clothes and her black hair rather lightly, so that the tooth of the paper added a speckle to it. Once she was colored, I returned her to the Silhouette to cut her out. I cut two additional of her shapes from black cardstock to balance her out with the layers on the dahlia.
I wanted the flower to transition smoothly over into her cape and so after laying the two down as I wanted them on my page, I overlapped the cape over the top of the flower and then popped the die over the flower to be able to know where to cut the cape. I then ran it through my die cutting machine. Using the colored layer as a guide, I then cut the two black layers out with a scissors and then glued the parts together of both the flower and the witch. I then glued them onto the page with the flower set into the digi as per the cutout. I then inlayed the pieces of her cape into the frame of the flower so that it was a merged unit.
I completed the page with the sentiment that I printed out on the computer and cut into strips and added some Wink of Stella to the right side of the dahlia.

Monica, your journal is wonderful. I was wondering what you would create and you surprised me so positively! Every woman is part witch, life itself is magic, and we create family life and more, so we have to be witches 🙂 This site is amazing. I love how the veil of her hat blends with the dahlia. I wish I knew English because you would have a student to learn to use all the devices you use. I am enchanted by your work for our challenge. Your coloring is stunning as always
